乔山人沉思良久，答曰：“吾弹琴，不过随心所欲耳。不为取悦他人，亦不为炫耀技艺。但求心境平和，自得其乐。若强求迎合，反失本真。故吾之琴音，虽美，却未必合于众耳。”

客闻言，肃然起敬，曰：“君言甚是！吾辈常陷于功名利禄之累，忘却了内心的宁静与自由。今日聆君之言，顿觉豁然开朗。”

于是，客拜别而去。而乔山人依旧每日抚琴于林间，逍遥自在。

There was once a hermit named Qiao Shanren, whose real name is unknown. He lived deep in the mountains and forests. Known for his calm and simple lifestyle, he enjoyed playing the guqin (a traditional Chinese musical instrument). His music was clear, melodious, and often echoed through the valleys. One day, a visitor came to see him, requesting to hear his music. Qiao Shanren happily agreed and began playing the guqin while singing. After the performance, the guest exclaimed, “Your skill in playing the guqin surpasses ordinary people, yet I have one question that troubles me, and I would like to know your opinion.”

Qiao Shanren smiled and asked, “What is troubling you?”

The guest replied, “I’ve heard that ancient masters of the guqin could convey emotions and intentions through their music, making listeners feel happy and relaxed. However, although your music is wonderful beyond words, it seems to lack a certain human touch. Why is this so?”

After pondering for some time, Qiao Shanren responded, “When I play the guqin, I do so freely without any ulterior motives. I neither aim to please others nor show off my skills. My only goal is to maintain inner peace and find joy within myself. If I try too hard to cater to others’ expectations, I risk losing my true essence. Therefore, while my music may be beautiful, it might not resonate with everyone.”

Upon hearing these words, the guest expressed great respect, saying, “Your words are profound! We often get caught up in the pursuit of fame and wealth, forgetting about inner tranquility and freedom. Hearing your words today has enlightened me greatly.”

With that, the guest bid farewell and left. Meanwhile, Qiao Shanren continued to play the guqin daily amidst the forest, living freely and happily.
